Tips For Cutting and Chopping In The Kitchen

Tips for using a knife in the kitchen.  If you have ever had a lot of chopping and cutting to do to get ready for a delicious meal, you know how important this is.

Always keep in mind that safety is so important when using a knife.  It is so easy to get in a hurry and cut your finger.  I know from experience.  I have done it more than once.

This shows a good way to cut an apple that saves you time and makes it easier and faster.  It also is a safe way to preserve your fingertips.

Hope you enjoyed this short video.  Did you like it and learn something?  Leave me a comment.

The keys To Becoming A Good Cook

Do you want to learn how to become a good cook?  Well I am here to tell you that you can do it!  Don't get discouraged if you have never learned to cook.  I have three tips for you.

1.  Take the time to think through your cooking projects.  This will help tremendously.  You may say that you don't have the time to do that.  You are rushed off your feet.  I completely understand.  Look for an extra 5 minutes on your lunch break or before you go to bed at night.  Or maybe you are a morning person.  Morning might be best for you.  Pick a time and just do it.

2.  Find Simple Recipes and use them over and over.  After you have gotten these recipes down pat and you feel comfortable with them you can try another one.  Or you can change the same recipe up a little.

3.  Measure correctly.  You don't have to own fancy measuring utensils.  You don't have to have a lot of them.  Just get the basics.  A set of measuring cups or one large measuring cup that will measure different amounts.  Whatever you have the money for and prefer to use.  Measuring spoons are helpful but not absolutely necessary.  Growing up my Mom used a teaspoon and a tablespoon from our silverware.  All her dishes were so good!  I think partly because of the love she added to them.

4.  Keep your cupboard stocked with the basic supplies you need.  This will save you time and headaches.  I know this from experience.  For me that would be salt, pepper, garlic, and cinnamon.  Sugar, flour, baking soda, baking powder and yeast.  Rice, pasta, oatmeal and canned veggies.  Also, eggs, butter, cheese and oil.

5.  Start early and don't rush.  Your meals will be easier to make, and taste better.  You will feel less stressed.

I hope these tips help.  I will be posting some recipes and more tips on cooking and not just surviving but actually enjoying your time in the kitchen.

Making a Menu Plan

Would you think it would be so hard for me to make a menu plan?  I don't know why but it is so hard for me to do.  I sat down last night and tried for I don't know how long.  I did two days and could not get much further.

Is it because it has been so long since I have done one?  Or maybe because I have a hard time figuring things out.  I don't know. I am going to keep working on what I have started.  If I take my time and don't try to do it all at once it should fall into place.

Writing it down on a legal pad to start gives me plenty of room to scratch out and rewrite it. There are many menu sheets you can download.  Some look pretty good but not exactly what works for me.  Once I get it down to where it works for me I will let you know.  I will try to make a download and you can try it and see if it helps you too.

Hubby and myself makes up our household.  We are semi-retired.  Our plans and needs would be different from other families that have children or other relatives living with them.

If there are things you would like help with or would like to read about here on my blog leave me a comment.
